There were 461,954 aircraft take-offs and landings at the 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations in April 2012 compared with 463,684 movements in April 2011. Year-over-year increases were reported by 48 airports. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario (35,409 movements) followed by Vancouver International, British Columbia (23,206 movements) were the most active sites in April 2012.

Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) increased 1.7% (+5,404 movements) in April 2012 from the same month the previous year. These airports reported 323,501 movements compared with 318,097 movements in April 2011. Year-over-year variations ranged from an increase of 1,804 movements (+34.3%) at Toronto/Billy Bishop Toronto City, Ontario to a drop of 1,095 movements (-16.8%) at Montréal/St-Hubert, Quebec. Forty-seven airports reported year-over-year increases in the number of itinerant aircraft movements in April 2012.

In April 2012, there were 138,453 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded. This represents a decrease of 4.9% (-7,134 movements) compared with the previous year. Abbotsford, British Columbia (7,952 movements) followed by Boundary Bay, British Columbia (7,872 movements) recorded the largest number of local movements.

Itinerant movements: domestic, transborder and international

There were 269,101 domestic itinerant movements reported by 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations in April 2012, up 1.6% (+4,338 movements) from April 2011. Vancouver International, British Columbia (17,226 movements) followed by Calgary International, Alberta (14,658 movements) reported the greatest number of domestic itinerant movements. Forty-eight airports reported year-over-year increases in the number of domestic movements in April 2012.

Seventy-six airports recorded 42,107 transborder itinerant movements (between Canada and the United States) in April 2012, up 1.5% from April 2011. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario (15,678 movements) reported the greatest number of transborder itinerant movements.

In April 2012, forty-three airports reported 12,293 other international itinerant movements, up 3.7% from April 2011. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario, recorded 5,515 other international itinerant movements. This represents 44.9% of the total other international itinerant movements reported.
