There were 456,313 aircraft take-offs and landings at the 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations in March 2012 compared with 452,257 movements in March 2011. Year-over-year increases were reported by 50 airports. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario (37,012 movements) followed by Vancouver International, British Columbia (24,121 movements) were the most active sites in March 2012.

Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) increased 1.6% (+5,016 movements) in March 2012 from the same month the previous year. These airports reported 322,508 movements compared with 317,492 movements in March 2011. Year-over-year variations ranged from an increase of 1,460 movements (+27.8%) at Toronto/Billy Bishop Toronto City, Ontario to a drop of 1,031 movements (-23.1%) at Moncton/Greater Moncton International, New Brunswick. Forty-nine airports reported year-over-year increases in the number of itinerant aircraft movements in March 2012.

In March 2012, there were 133,805 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded. This represents a decrease of 0.7% (-960 movements) compared with the previous year. Montréal/St-Hubert, Quebec (9,000 movements) followed by Calgary/Springbank, Alberta (6,902 movements) recorded the largest number of local movements.

Itinerant movements: domestic, transborder and international

There were 264,713 domestic itinerant movements reported by 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations in March 2012, up 1.6% (+4,246 movements) from March 2011. Vancouver International, British Columbia (17,853 movements) followed by Calgary International, Alberta (15,509 movements) reported the greatest number of domestic itinerant movements. Forty-seven airports reported year-over-year increases in the number of domestic movements in March 2012.

Seventy-two airports recorded 43,656 transborder itinerant movements (between Canada and the United States) in March 2012, remaining virtually unchanged (-0.3%) from March 2011. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario (16,256 movements) reported the greatest number of transborder itinerant movements.

In March 2012, forty-five airports reported 14,139 other international itinerant movements, up 6.7% from March 2011. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario, recorded 6,025 other international itinerant movements. This represents 42.6% of the total other international itinerant movements reported.
