There were 407,036 aircraft take-offs and landings at the 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations in February 2012 compared with 358,656 movements in February 2011. The growth in aircraft movements can be partly attributed to the extra day for the leap year. Year-over-year increases were reported by 70 airports. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario (33,534 movements) followed by Vancouver International, British Columbia (21,935 movements) were the most active sites in February 2012.
Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) increased 10.4% (+27,604 movements) in February 2012 from the same month the previous year. These airports reported 292,230 movements compared with 264,626 movements in February 2011. Year-over-year variations ranged from an increase of 2,282 movements (+56.1%) at Toronto/Billy Bishop Toronto City, Ontario to a drop of 449 movements (-31.4%) at Montreal/Mirabel International, Quebec. Seventy-one airports reported year-over-year increases in the number of itinerant aircraft movements in February 2012.
In February 2012, there were 114,806 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded. This represents an increase of 22.1% (+20,776 movements) compared with the previous year. Calgary/Springbank, Alberta (6,734 movements) followed by Thunder Bay, Ontario (6,124 movements) recorded the largest number of local movements.
Itinerant movements: domestic, transborder and international
There were 240,428 domestic itinerant movements reported by 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations in February 2012, up 11.7% (+25,130 movements) from February 2011. Vancouver International, British Columbia (16,240 movements) followed by Calgary International, Alberta (14,866 movements) reported the greatest number of domestic itinerant movements. Seventy-one airports reported year-over-year increases in the number of domestic movements in February 2012.
Seventy-four airports recorded 39,142 transborder itinerant movements (between Canada and the United States) in February 2012, up 5% from February 2011. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario (14,742 movements) reported the greatest number of transborder itinerant movements.
In February 2012, forty-five airports reported 12,660 other international itinerant movements, up 5.0% from February 2011. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario, recorded 5,466 other international itinerant movements. This represents 43.2% of the total other international itinerant movements reported.
