There were 364,649 aircraft take-offs and landings at the 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations in December 2011 compared with 343,916 movements in December 2010. Year-over-year increases were reported by 62 airports. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario (34,526 movements) followed by Vancouver International, British Columbia (23,071 movements) were the most active sites in December 2011.
Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) increased 5.5% (+14,436 movements) in December 2011 from the same month the previous year. These airports reported 278,641 movements compared with 264,205 movements in December 2010. Year-over-year variations ranged from an increase of 1,715 movements (+41.0%) at Toronto/Billy Bishop Toronto City, Ontario to a drop of 799 movements (-22.4%) at Moncton/Greater Moncton International, New Brunswick. Sixty-one airports reported year-over-year increases in the number of itinerant aircraft movements in December 2011.
In December 2011, there were 86,008 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded. This represents an increase of 7.9% (+6,297 movements) compared with the previous year. Calgary/Springbank, Alberta (5,166 movements) followed by Boundary Bay, British Columbia (4,780 movements) recorded the largest number of local movements.
Itinerant movements: domestic, transborder and international
There were 227,158 domestic itinerant movements reported by 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations in December 2011, up 6.5% (+13,842 movements) from December 2010. Vancouver International, British Columbia (16,991 movements) followed by Calgary International, Alberta (15,106 movements) reported the greatest number of domestic itinerant movements. Fifty-nine airports reported year-over-year increases in the number of domestic movements in December 2011.
Seventy-four airports recorded 39,732 transborder itinerant movements (between Canada and the United States) in December 2011, no change from December 2010. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario (14,636 movements) reported the greatest number of transborder itinerant movements.
In December 2011, forty airports reported 11,751 other international itinerant movements, up 4.6% from December 2010. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario, recorded 5,234 other international itinerant movements. This represents 44.5% of the total other international itinerant movements reported.
