Aircraft take-offs and landings at the 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations increased 6.2% in September 2011 from September 2010. These airports reported 506,672 movements compared with 477,294 movements in September 2010. Year-over-year increases were reported by 61 airports. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario (36,692 movements) followed by Vancouver International, British Columbia (25,992 movements) were the most active sites in September 2011.

There were 367,854 itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) reported in September 2011. This represents a 6.7% increase (+23,015 movements) compared with the same month a year earlier. The year-over-year variations ranged from an increase of 2,015 movements (+59.4%) at Calgary/Springbank, Alberta to a drop of 1,129 movements (-28.4%) at Fredericton International, New Brunswick. Sixty-nine airports reported year-over-year increases in the number of itinerant aircraft movements in September 2011.

In September 2011, there were 138,818 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded. This represents an increase of 4.8% (+6,363 movements) compared with the previous year. Chicoutimi/St-Honoré, Quebec (9,290 movements) followed by Montréal/St-Hubert, Quebec (9,286 movements) recorded the largest number of local movements.

Itinerant movements: domestic, transborder and international

There were 314,717 domestic itinerant movements reported by 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations in September 2011, up 7.7% (+22,536 movements) from September 2010. Vancouver International, British Columbia (19,673 movements) followed by Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario (16,737 movements) reported the greatest number of domestic itinerant movements.

Eighty-eight airports reported 42,847 transborder itinerant movements (between Canada and the United States) in September 2011. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario (15,187 movements) reported the greatest number of transborder itinerant movements. This represents a decrease of 2.8% (-435 movements) compared with the previous year.

In September 2011, thirty-six airports reported 10,290 other international itinerant movements. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario, recorded 4,676 other international itinerant movements. This represents 45.4% of the total other international itinerant movements reported.
