Aircraft take-offs and landings at the 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations decreased 5.9% in April 2011 from April 2010. These airports reported 462,118 movements in April compared with 490,868 movements in April 2010. Year-over-year decreases were reported by 51 airports. Toronto/Lester B Pearson International, Ontario (34,954 movements) followed by Vancouver International, British Columbia (23,348 movements) were the most active sites in April 2011.
There were 317,499 itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) reported in April 2011. This represents a 7.4% decrease (-25,349 movements) compared with the same month a year earlier. The year-over-year variations ranged from an increase of 1,310 movements (+3.9%) at Toronto/Lester B Pearson International, Ontario to a drop of 3,058 movements (-36.8%) at Toronto/Billy Bishop Toronto City, Ontario. Fifty seven airports reported year-over-year decreases in the number of itinerant aircraft movements in April 2011.
In April 2011, there were 144,619 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded. This represents a decrease of 2.3% (-3,401 movements) compared with the previous year. Montréal/St-Hubert, Quebec (8,078 movements) followed by Calgary/Springbank, Alberta (7,466 movements) recorded the largest number of local movements.
Itinerant movements: domestic, transborder and international
There were 264,217 domestic itinerant movements reported in April 2011, down 8.8% (-25,358 movements) from April 2010. Vancouver International, British Columbia (17,378 movements) followed by Calgary International, Alberta (14,364 movements) reported the greatest number of domestic itinerant movements.
Seventy-five airports reported 41,434 transborder itinerant movements (between Canada and the United States) in April 2011, down 0.5% (-223 movements) from the previous year. Toronto/Lester B Pearson International, Ontario (15,446 movements) reported the greatest number of transborder itinerant movements. This represents 37.3% of the total transborder itinerant movements.
In April 2011, forty airports reported 11,848 other international itinerant movements, up 2.0% (+232 movements) from the previous year. Toronto/Lester B Pearson International, Ontario (5,079 movements) recorded the greatest number of other international itinerant movements. This represents 42.9% of the total other international itinerant movements reported.
