Aircraft take-offs and landings at the 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations increased 5.7% in October 2010 from October 2009. These airports reported 501,678 movements in October compared with 474,794 movements in October 2009. Toronto/Lester B Pearson International, Ontario (35,434 movements) followed by Vancouver International, British Columbia (24,577 movements) were the most active sites in October 2010. Year-over-year increases were reported by 61 airports.

There were 346,855 itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) reported in October 2010. This represents a 2.1% increase (+7,221 movements) compared with the same month a year earlier. The year-over-year variations ranged from an increase of 82.1% for Fort Nelson, British Columbia to a decline of 62.2% for St. Catharines, Ontario. Year-over-year increases in the number of itinerant aircraft movements were reported by 59 airports in October 2010.

In October 2010, there were 154,823 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded. Calgary/Springbank, Alberta recorded the largest gain, increasing by 2,931 local movements (+50.0%).

Itinerant movements: domestic, transborder and international

There were 294,180 domestic itinerant movements reported in October 2010, up 1.4% (+3,960 movements) from October 2009. Vancouver International, British Columbia (18,407) followed by Calgary International, Alberta (15,546) reported the greatest number of domestic itinerant movements.

Seventy-nine airports reported 43,429 transborder itinerant movements (between Canada and the United States) in October 2010, up 6.8% (+2,747 movements) from the previous year. Toronto/Lester B Pearson International, Ontario (15,945) reported the greatest number of transborder itinerant movements. This represents 36.7% of the total transborder itinerant movements.

Thirty-eight airports reported 9,245 other international itinerant movements in October 2010, up 5.9% (+513 movements) from the previous year. Toronto/Lester B Pearson International, Ontario (4,286) recorded the greatest number of other international itinerant movements. This represents 46.4% of the total other international itinerant movements.
