Aircraft take-offs and landings at the 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations decreased 11.6% in September 2010 from September 2009. These airports reported 475,902 movements in September compared with 538,362 movements in September 2009. Year over year increases were reported by 30 airports. Toronto/Lester B Pearson International, Ontario (35,627 movements) followed by Vancouver International, British Columbia (25,493 movements) were the most active sites in September 2010.

There were 344,510 itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) reported in September 2010. This represents a 9.8% decrease (-37,264 movements) compared with the same month a year earlier. The year over year variations ranged from an increase of 59.9% for Wabush, Newfoundland and Labrador to a decline of 44.2% for Moncton/Greater Moncton International, New Brunswick. Year-over-year increases in the number of itinerant aircraft movements were reported by 27 airports in September 2010.

There were 131,392 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded in September 2010. Toronto/Buttonville Municipal, Ontario recorded the largest gain, increasing by 2,688 local movements (+38.1%). Only partial local movement data have been received for the month of September 2010 for Oshawa, Ontario.

Itinerant movements: domestic, transborder and international

There were 291,893 domestic itinerant movements reported in September 2010, down 11.8% (-39,157 movements) from September 2009. Vancouver International, British Columbia (19,329) followed by Calgary International, Alberta (15,716) reported the greatest number of domestic itinerant movements.

Eighty-two airports reported 42,906 transborder itinerant movements (between Canada and the United States) in September 2010, up 5.5% (+2,253 movements) from the previous year. Toronto/Lester B Pearson International, Ontario (15,622) followed by Montréal/Pierre Elliott Trudeau International, Quebec (6,042) reported the greatest number of transborder itinerant movements.

Thirty-seven airports reported 9,711 other international itinerant movements in September 2010, down 3.6% (-360 movements) from the previous year. Toronto/Lester B Pearson International, Ontario recorded the largest gain, increasing by 518 other international itinerant movements (+13.4%) while Fort McMurray, Alberta reported the largest decline with 557 fewer movements (-98.4%) compared with the previous year.
