Aircraft take-offs and landings at the 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations decreased 3.1% in August 2010 from August 2009. These airports reported 537,351 movements in August compared with 554,654 movements in August 2009. Year over year increases were reported by 52 airports. Toronto/Lester B Pearson International, Ontario (38,191 movements) followed by Vancouver International, British Columbia (29,406 movements) were the most active sites in August 2010.

There were 392,668 itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) reported in August 2010. This represents a 2.8% decrease (-11,298 movements) compared with the same month a year earlier. The year over year variations ranged from an increase of 55.9% for St-Jean, Quebec to a decline of 46.0% for Kamloops, British Columbia. Year-over-year increases in the number of itinerant aircraft movements were reported by 45 airports in August 2010.

There were 144,683 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded in August 2010. Toronto/Buttonville Municipal, Ontario recorded the largest gain, increasing by 4,136 local movements (+55.6%). Only partial local movement data have been received for the month of August 2010 for Oshawa, Ontario and Sault Ste Marie, Ontario.

Itinerant movements: domestic, transborder and international

There were 335,085 domestic itinerant movements reported in August 2010, down 4.1% (-14,486 movements) from August 2009. Vancouver International, British Columbia (22,353) followed by Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario (16,749) reported the greatest number of domestic itinerant movements.

Eighty-three airports reported 46,410 transborder itinerant movements (between Canada and the United States) in August 2010, up 8.1% (+3,473 movements) from the previous year. Toronto/Lester B Pearson International, Ontario (16,203) followed by Montréal/Pierre Elliott Trudeau International, Quebec (6,337) reported the greatest number of transborder itinerant movements.

Forty-one airports reported 11,173 other international itinerant movements in August 2010, down 2.5% (-285 movements) from the previous year. Toronto/Lester B Pearson International, Ontario recorded the largest gain, increasing by 773 other international itinerant movements (+17.6%) while Fort McMurray, Alberta reported the largest decline with 623 fewer movements (-98.9%) compared with the previous year.
