Aircraft take-offs and landings at the 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations decreased 5.8% in April 2010 compared with April 2009. These airports reported 490,408 movements in April compared with 520,820 movements in April 2009.
Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) decreased 2.5% (-8,820 movements) in April 2010 compared with the same month a year earlier.
Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) dropped by 12.8% (-21,592 movements) in April 2010 over the previous year.
The 42 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers reported 397,170 aircraft take-offs and landings in April 2010, down 4.6% (-19,173 movements) from April 2009. The variations ranged from an increase of 87.4% at Whitehorse International, Yukon to a decline of 38.2% at Boundary Bay, British Columbia. Year-over-year increases in the number of aircraft movements were reported by 18 of these airports in April 2010.
Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) decreased 1.3% (-3,690 movements) in April 2010 compared with the same month a year earlier. Year-over-year variations ranged from a 91.9% increase (+3,984 movements) at Toronto/Billy Bishop Toronto City, Ontario to a decline of 43.0% (-3,658 movements) at Boundary Bay, British Columbia.
Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) declined by 15,483 movements (-11.4%) in April 2010 compared with April 2009. Whitehorse International, Yukon recorded the largest gain, increasing by 1,244 movements (+158.1%) while Boundary Bay, British Columbia reported the largest decline with 3,589 fewer movements (-34.3%) compared with the previous year.
The Flight Service Station at Fredericton International, New Brunswick closed effective January 2010 and re-opened as an Air Traffic Control Tower. Fredericton International reported 8,415 movements in April 2010 compared with 7,641 movements reported for the Flight Service Station in April 2009, up 10.1%.
The 51 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA flight service stations reported 93,238 aircraft take-offs and landings in April 2010 down 10.8% (-11,239 movements) compared with April 2009. The variations ranged from an 85.9% increase (+801 movements) at Kenora, Ontario to a decline of 42.4% (-1,344 movements) at Campbell River, British Columbia. Year-over-year increases in aircraft movements were reported by 24 of these airports in April 2010.
Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) decreased 7.2% (-5,130 movements) in April 2010 compared with the same month a year earlier. Variations ranged from a 36.9% increase (+305 movements) at Kenora, Ontario to a decline of 33.8% (-672 movements) at Campbell River, British Columbia.
Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded in April 2010 dropped by 18.3% (-6,109 movements) compared with the same month a year earlier. Montréal/Mirabel International, Quebec recorded the largest gain in local movements, reporting an increase of 878 movements (+145.6%). Grande Prairie, Alberta recorded the largest decline in local movements, reporting 940 fewer movements (-56.6%) compared with April 2009.
