Aircraft take-offs and landings at the 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations decreased 11.4% in February 2010 compared with February 2009. These airports reported 371,909 movements in February compared with 419,853 movements in February 2009.
Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) decreased 7.6% (-22,409 movements) in February 2010 compared with the same month a year earlier.
Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) fell by 20.3% (-25,535 movements) in February 2010 over the previous year.
The 42 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers reported 302,969 aircraft take-offs and landings in February 2010, down 10.7% (-36,267 movements) from February 2009. Increases in the number of aircraft movements were reported by 11 of these airports in February 2010. The variations ranged from an increase of 23.9% at Hamilton, Ontario to a decline of 87.7% at Boundary Bay, British Columbia.
Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) decreased 6.5% (-15,361 movements) in February 2010 compared with the same month a year earlier. Year-over-year variations in itinerant movements ranged from a 38.2% increase (+1,322 movements) at Billy Bishop Toronto City, Ontario to a decline of 84.8% (-5,575 movements) at Boundary Bay, British Columbia.
Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) declined by 20,906 movements (-20.3%) in February 2010 compared with February 2009. Winnipeg/St. Andrews, Manitoba recorded the largest gain, increasing by 1,123 movements (+23.9%) while Boundary Bay, British Columbia reported the largest decline with 7,547 fewer movements (-89.9%) compared with the previous year.
The Flight Service Station at Fredericton International, New Brunswick closed effective January 2010 and re-opened as an Air Traffic Control Tower. Fredericton reported 5,800 movements in February 2010 compared with 6,127 movements reported for the Flight Service Station in February 2009, down 5.3%.
The 51 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA flight service stations reported 68,940 aircraft take-offs and landings in February 2010 down 14.5% (-11,677 movements) compared with February 2009. Year-over-year increases in aircraft movements were reported by 21 of these airports in February 2010. The variations ranged from a 181.0% increase (+829 movements) at Castlegar, British Columbia to a decline of 48.7% (-1,576 movements) at Campbell River, British Columbia.
Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) decreased 12.3% (-7,048 movements) in February 2010 compared with the same month a year earlier. Variations in itinerant movements ranged from a 72.0% increase (+295 movements) at Castlegar, British Columbia to a decline of 37.0% (-439 movements) at Medicine Hat, Alberta.
Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded in February 2010 fell 19.9% (-4,629 movements) compared with the same month a year earlier. Montreal/Mirabel International, Quebec recorded the largest gain in local movements, reporting an increase of 702 movements (+188.7%). Campbell River, British Columbia recorded the largest decline in local movements, reporting 1,184 fewer movements (-65.9%) compared with February 2009.
