Aircraft take-offs and landings at the 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations increased by 7.2% in January 2010 compared with January 2009. These airports reported 388,346 movements in January 2010 compared with 362,228 movements in January 2009.
Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) increased 5.0% (+13,661 movements) in January 2010 compared with the same month a year earlier.
Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) increased by 14.0% (+12,457 movements) in January 2010 over the previous year.
Airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers
The 42 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers reported 319,773 aircraft take-offs and landings in January 2010 up 10.5% (+30,346 movements) compared with January 2009. Year-over-year increases in aircraft movements were reported by 29 of these airports in January 2010. The variations ranged from an increase of 145.4% at Pitt Meadows, British Columbia to a decline of 28.0% at Oshawa, Ontario.
Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) increased 7.6% (+16,576 movements) in January 2010 compared with the same month a year earlier. Year-over-year variations in itinerant movements ranged from a 200.4% increase (+2,233 movements) at Pitt Meadows, British Columbia to a decline of 20.2% (-270 movements) at Windsor, Ontario.
Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) rose by 13,770 movements (+19.6%) in January 2010 compared with January 2009. Thunder Bay, Ontario recorded the largest gain in local movements, increasing by 2,740 movements (+115.3%) while London, Ontario reported the largest decline with 2,106 fewer movements (-34.6%) compared with the previous year.
The Flight Service Station at Fredericton International, New Brunswick closed effective January 2010 and re-opened as an Air Traffic Control Tower. Fredericton reported 8,898 movements in January 2010 compared with 6,308 movements reported for the Flight Service Station in January 2009, up 41.1%.
Airports with NAV CANADA flight service stations
The 51 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA flight service stations reported 68,573 aircraft take-offs and landings in January 2010 down 5.8% (-4,228 movements) compared with January 2009. Year-over-year increases in aircraft movements were reported by 26 of these airports in January 2010. The variations ranged from a 90.3% increase (+353 movements) at Castlegar, British Columbia to a decline of 30.8% (-1,061 movements) at North Bay, Ontario.
Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) decreased by 5.4% (-2,915 movements) in January 2010 compared with the same month a year earlier. Year-over-year variations in itinerant movements ranged from a 74.1% increase (+700 movements) at Nanaimo, British Columbia to a decline of 22.8% (-143 movements) at Peace River, Alberta.
Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded in January 2010 decreased by 6.9% (-1,313 movements) compared with the same month a year earlier. Penticton, British Columbia recorded the largest gain in local movements, increasing by 960 movements (+110.9%) compared with January 2009. North Bay, Ontario recorded the largest decline in local movements, dropping 894 movements (-44.3%) compared with January 2009.
