Aircraft take-offs and landings at the 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations increased by 7.5% in December compared with December 2008. These airports reported 357,545 movements in December 2009 compared with 332,693 movements in December 2008.
Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) increased 5.1% (+13,250 movements) in December 2009 compared with the same month a year earlier.
Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) increased by 16.0% (+11,602 movements) in December 2009 over the previous year.
The 41 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers reported 286,174 aircraft take-offs and landings in December 2009 up 7.5% (+19,962 movements) compared with December 2008. Year-over-year increases in aircraft movements were reported by 27 of these airports in December 2009. The variations ranged from an increase of 113.5% at Pitt Meadows, British Columbia to a decline of 27.0% at Gander International, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) increased 5.6% (+11,588 movements) in December 2009 compared with the same month a year earlier. Year-over-year variations in itinerant movements ranged from a 165.3% increase (+1,941 movements) at Pitt Meadows, British Columbia to a decline of 20.6% (-298 movements) at Gander International, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) rose by 8,374 movements (+14.6%) in December 2009 compared with December 2008. Victoria International, British Columbia recorded the largest gain in local movements, increasing by 2,515 movements (+72.1%) while Moncton/Greater Moncton International, New Brunswick reported the largest decline with 1,888 fewer movements (-40.2%) compared with the previous year.
The 52 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA flight service stations reported 71,371 aircraft take-offs and landings in December 2009 up 7.4% (+4,890 movements) compared with December 2008. Year-over-year increases in aircraft movements were reported by 32 of these airports in December 2009. The variations ranged from a 95.7% increase (+982 movements) at Nanaimo, British Columbia to a decline of 54.3% (-1,008 movements) at Whitecourt, Alberta.

Year-over-year variations in itinerant movements ranged from a 70.3% increase (+634 movements) at Nanaimo, British Columbia to a decline of 48.8% (-312 movements) at Whitecourt, Alberta.
Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded in December 2009 increased by 21.6% (+3,228 movements) compared with the same month a year earlier. Fredericton International, New Brunswick recorded the largest gain in local movements, increasing by 1,009 movements (+43.5%) compared with December 2008. Whitecourt, Alberta recorded the largest decline in local movements, dropping 696 movements (-57.1%) compared with December 2008.
