Aircraft take-offs and landings at the 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations increased by 2.1% in November compared with November 2008. These 93 airports reported 453,984 movements in November compared with 444,640 movements at 95 airports in November 2008.
Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) increased 1.3% (+4,128 movements) in November 2009 compared with the same month a year earlier.
Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) increased by 3.9% (+5,216 movements) in November 2009 over the previous year.
The 41 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers reported 361,815 aircraft take-offs and landings in November 2009 up 0.9% (+3,368 movements) compared with November 2008. Year-over-year increases in aircraft movements were reported by 20 of these airports in November 2009. The variations ranged from an increase of 45.3% at Chicoutimi/St-Honoré, Quebec to a decline of 43.0% at Langley, British Columbia.
Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) increased 0.4% (+1,024 movements) in November 2009 compared with the same month a year earlier. Year-over-year variations in itinerant movements ranged from a 47.7% increase (+582 movements) at Edmonton/Villeneuve, Alberta to a decline of 34.2% (-1,634 movements) at Boundary Bay, British Columbia.
Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) rose by 2,344 movements (+2.1%) in November 2009 compared with November 2008. Montréal/St-Hubert, Quebec recorded the largest gain in local movements, increasing by 3,424 movements (+64.3%) while Abbotsford, British Columbia reported the largest decline with 2,804 fewer movements (-39.1%) compared with the previous year.
The Air Traffic Control Tower at Montréal/Mirabel International, Quebec closed in December 2008 and re-opened as a Flight Service Station. Montréal/Mirabel International reported 2,128 itinerant and local movements in November 2008 compared with 2,589 movements reported for the Flight Service Station in November 2009, up 21.7%.
The 52 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA flight service stations reported 92,169 aircraft take-offs and landings in November 2009 up 6.9% (+5,976 movements) compared with November 2008. Year-over-year increases in aircraft movements were reported by 30 of these airports in November 2009. The variations ranged from a 93.8% increase (+900 movements) at Brandon Municipal, Manitoba to a decline of 40.5% (-948 movements) at Campbell River, British Columbia.
Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) increased by 5.1% (+3,104 movements) in November 2009 compared with the same month a year earlier. Year-over-year variations in itinerant movements ranged from a 72.6% increase (+406 movements) at Brandon Municipal, Manitoba to a decline of 28.2% (-400 movements) at Lethbridge, Alberta.
Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded in November 2009 increased by 11.3% (+2,872 movements) compared with the same month a year earlier. North Bay, Ontario recorded the largest gain in local movements, increasing by 900 movements (+43.5%) compared with November 2008. Norman Wells, Northwest Territories recorded the largest decline in local movements, dropping 814 movements (-40.1%) compared with November 2008.
