Aircraft take-offs and landings at Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations decreased (-12.9%) in January 2009 compared with January 2008. These 93 airports reported 362,228 movements in January 2009 compared with 416,051 movements at 95 airports in January 2008.

Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) fell 9.2% (-27,664 movements) in January 2009 compared with the same month a year earlier.

Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) dropped by 22.7% (-26,159 movements) in January 2009 over the previous year.

Airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers

The 41 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers reported 289,427 aircraft take-offs and landings in January down 14.1% (-47,529 movements) compared with January 2008. Year-over-year increases in aircraft movements were reported by 7 of these airports in January 2009. The variations ranged from an increase of 53.2% at London, Ontario to a decline of 53.2% at Gander International, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) declined 9.5% in January compared with the same month a year earlier. Year-over-year variations in itinerant movements ranged from a 22.1% increase (+818 movements) at London, Ontario to a decline of 48.8% (-1,715 movements) at Vancouver Harbour, British Columbia.

Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) dropped by 24,413 movements (-25.8%) in January compared with January 2008. London, Ontario recorded the largest gain in local movements, increasing by 2,868 movements (+89.1%) while Calgary/Springbank, Alberta reported the largest decline with 4,724 fewer movements (-45.1%) compared with the previous year.

The Air Traffic Control Tower at Sudbury, Ontario closed in June 2008 and re-opened as a Flight Service Station. Sudbury reported 2,186 movements in January 2008 compared with 2,323 movements reported for the Flight Service Station in January 2009, up 6.3%.

The Flight Service Station at Fort McMurray, Alberta closed effective October 2008 and re-opened as an Air Traffic Control Tower. Fort McMurray reported 4,148 movements in January 2008 compared with 3,603 movements reported for the Air Traffic Control Tower in January 2009, down 13.1%.

The Air Traffic Control Tower at Montréal/Mirabel International, Quebec closed in December 2008 and re-opened as a Flight Service Station. Montréal/Mirabel International reported 2,023 movements in January 2008 compared with 1,779 movements reported for the Flight Service Station in January 2009, down 12.1%.

Airports with NAV CANADA flight service stations

The 52 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA flight service stations reported 72,801 aircraft take-offs and landings in January down 8.0% (-6,294 movements) compared with January 2008. Year-over-year increases in aircraft movements were reported by 22 of these airports in January 2009. The variations ranged from a 43.4 % increase (+1,909 movements) at Fredericton International, New Brunswick to a decline of 47.9% (-1,700 movements) at Campbell River, British Columbia.

Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) decreased by 7.8% (-4,548 movements) in January 2009 compared with the same month a year earlier. Year-over-year variations in itinerant movements ranged from a 44.9% increase (+1,127 movements) at Fredericton International, New Brunswick to a decline of 44.7% (-1,133 movements) at Victoria Harbour, British Columbia.

Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded in January 2009 decreased by 8.4% (-1,746 movements) compared with the same month a year earlier. Fredericton International, New Brunswick recorded the largest gain in local movements, increasing by 782 movements (+41.4%) compared with January 2008. Campbell River, British Columbia recorded the largest decline in local movements, dropping 1,256 movements (-61.3%) compared with January 2008.
