Analysis

Aircraft take-offs and landings at Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations decreased (-7.5%) in November 2008 compared with November 2007. These 95 airports reported 444,594 movements in November 2008 compared with 480,460 movements in November 2007.

Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) declined 5.7% (-18,771 movements) in November 2008 compared with the same month a year earlier.

Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) fell by 11.2% (-17,095 movements) in November 2008 over the previous year.

Airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers

The 42 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers reported 358,417 aircraft take-offs and landings in November down 7.8% (-30,270 movements) compared with November 2007. Year-over-year increases in aircraft movements were reported by 14 of these airports in November 2008. The variations ranged from an increase of 171.3% at St-Jean, Quebec to a decline of 35.4% at Hamilton, Ontario.

Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) decreased 4.8% in November compared with the same month a year earlier. Year-over-year variations in itinerant movements ranged from a 98.2% increase (+808 movements) at St-Jean, Quebec to a decline of 28.8% (-1,679 movements) at Abbotsford, British Columbia.

Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) declined by 17,630 movements (-13.8%) in November compared with November 2007. Moncton/Greater Moncton International, New Brunswick recorded the largest gain in local movements, increasing by 1,709 movements (+41.1%) while Calgary/Springbank, Alberta reported 3,319 fewer movements (-31.4%) compared with the previous year.

The Air Traffic Control Tower at Sudbury, Ontario closed in June 2008 and re-opened as a Flight Service Station. Sudbury reported 2,442 movements in November 2007 compared with 2,540 movements reported for the Flight Service Station in November 2008.

The Flight Service Station at Fort McMurray, Alberta closed effective October 2008 and re-opened as an Air Traffic Control Tower. Fort McMurray reported 4,417 movements in November 2007 compared with 4,660 movements reported for the Air Traffic Control Tower in November 2008.

Airports with NAV CANADA flight service stations

The 53 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA flight service stations reported 86,177 aircraft take-offs and landings in November down 6.1% (-5,596 movements) compared with November 2007. Year-over-year increases in aircraft movements were reported by 19 of these airports in November 2008. The variations ranged from a 58.0% increase (+2,532 movements) at Fredericton International, New Brunswick to a decline of 47.9% (-709 movements) at Terrace, British Columbia.

Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) decreased by 9.2% (-6,131 movements) in November 2008 compared with the same month a year earlier. Year-over-year variations in itinerant movements ranged from a 43.1% increase (+998 movements) at Fredericton International, New Brunswick to a decline of 41.6% (-546 movements) at Terrace, British Columbia.

Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded in November 2008 rose by 2.2% (+535 movements) compared with the same month a year earlier. Fredericton International, New Brunswick recorded the largest gain in local movements, increasing by 1,534 movements (+74.8%) compared with November 2007
