Aircraft take-offs and landings at Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations increased (5.9%) in September 2008 compared with September 2007. These 95 airports reported 590,174 movements in September 2008 compared with 557,040 movements in September 2007.
Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) grew 4.6% (+17,665 movements) in September 2008 compared with the same month a year earlier.
Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) rose by 9.0% (+15,469 movements) in September 2008 over the previous year.
The 41 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers reported 466,087 aircraft take-offs and landings in September up 5.0% (+22,138 movements) compared with September 2007. Year-over-year increases in aircraft movements were reported by 19 of these airports in September 2008. The variations ranged from an increase of 88.7% at London, Ontario to a decline of 48.9% at Gander International, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) increased 4.4% in September compared with the same month a year earlier. Year-over-year variations in itinerant movements ranged from a 45.1% increase (+3,090 movements) at Boundary Bay, British Columbia to a decline of 35.6% (-1,046 movements) at St-Jean, Quebec.
Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) rose by 8,968 movements (+6.2%) in September compared with September 2007. London, Ontario recorded the largest gain in local movements, increasing by 6,050 movements (+160.2%) while Gander International, Newfoundland and Labrador reported 2,764 fewer movements (-66.6%) compared with September 2007.
The Air Traffic Control Tower at Sudbury, Ontario closed in June 2008 and re-opened as a Flight Service Station. Sudbury reported 2,901 movements in September 2007 compared with 2,863 movements reported for the Flight Service Station in September 2008, a drop of 1.3 %.
The 54 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA flight service stations reported 124,087 aircraft take-offs and landings in September up 9.7% (+10,996 movements) compared with September 2007. Year-over-year increases in aircraft movements were reported by 33 of these airports in September 2008. The variations ranged from a 95.2% increase (+3,821 movements) at Fredericton International, New Brunswick to a decline of 40.8% (-2,238 movements) at St. Catharines, Ontario.
Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) increased by 5.1% (+4,495 movements) in September 2008 compared with the same month a year earlier. Year-over-year variations in itinerant movements ranged from a 67.9% increase (+1,614 movements) at Fredericton International, New Brunswick to a decline of 53.0% (-2,050 movements) at St. Catharines, Ontario.
Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded in September 2008 rose by 25.2% (+6,501 movements) compared with the same month a year earlier. Fredericton International, New Brunswick recorded the largest gain in local movements, increasing by 2,207 movements (+134.7%) compared with September 2007.
