Aircraft take-offs and landings at Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations remained relatively unchanged in August 2008 compared to August 2007. These 95 airports reported 584,870 movements in August 2008 compared with 584,891 movements in August 2007.
Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) slipped 0.4% (-1,566 movements) in August 2008 compared with the same month a year earlier.
Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) edged up by 1.0% (+1,545 movements) in August 2008 over the previous year.
The 41 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers reported 459,756 aircraft take-offs and landings in August down 1.2% (-5,397 movements) compared with August 2007. Year-over-year increases in aircraft movements were reported by only 11 of these airports in August 2008. The variations ranged from an increase of 134.0% at London, Ontario to a decline of 54.8% at Gander International, Newfoundland and Labrador.
In June 2008, the Air Traffic Control Tower at Sudbury, Ontario was closed. In August 2007, Sudbury, Ontario reported 4,084 movements.
Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) decreased 1.4% in August compared with the same month a year earlier. Year-over-year variations in itinerant movements ranged from a 56.3% increase (+2,989 movements) at London, Ontario to a decline of 36.0% (-1,166 movements) at Gander International, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) decreased marginally (+0.7%) down by 969 movements in August compared with August 2007. London, Ontario recorded the largest gain in local movements, increasing by 8,434 movements (+262.7%) while Gander International, Newfoundland and Labrador reported 2,530 fewer movements (-72.3%) compared with August 2007.
The 54 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA flight service stations reported 125,114 aircraft take-offs and landings in August up 4.5% (+5,376 movements) compared with August 2007. Year-over-year increases in aircraft movements were reported by 26 of these airports in August 2008. The variations ranged from a 73.4% increase (+807 movements) at Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec to a decline of -38.2% (-522 movements) at Lloydminster, Alberta.
In June 2008 a Flight Service Station was opened at Sudbury, Ontario. In August 2008, Sudbury, Ontario reported 3,271 movements,
Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) increased by 3.0% (+2,862 movements) in August 2008 compared with the same month a year earlier. Year-over-year variations in itinerant movements ranged from a 42.7% increase (+179 movements) at Mont-Joli, Quebec to a decline of 35.5% (-705 movements) at Norman Wells, Northwest Territories.
Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded in August 2008 rose by 11.0% (+2,514 movements) compared with the same month a year earlier. Fredericton International, New Brunswick recorded the largest gain in local movements, increasing by 1,318 movements (+216.8%) compared with August 2007.
