Analysis

Aircraft take-offs and landings at Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations increased in April 2008 compared to April 2007. These 95 airports reported 553,855 movements in April 2008 compared with 504,640 movements at 95 airports in April 2007, an increase of 9.8% (+49,215 movements).

Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) increased by 9.4% (+31,913 movements) in April 2008 compared with the same month a year earlier.

Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) increased by 10.5% (+17,302 movements) in April 2008 compared with April 2007.

Airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers

The 42 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers reported 441,152 aircraft take-offs and landings in April, up 10.3% (+41,036 movements) compared with April 2007. Year-over-year increases in aircraft movements were reported by 26 of these airports in April 2008. The variations ranged from an increase of 182.5% at London, Ontario to a decline of 20.3% at Kelowna, British Columbia.

Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) increased by 10.0% (+26,607 movements) in April compared with the same month a year earlier. Year-over-year variations in itinerant movements ranged from a 72.5% increase (+1,278 movements) at London, Ontario to a decline of 11.6% (-174 movements) at Edmonton/Villeneuve, Alberta.

Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) increased by 10.9% (+14,429 movements) in April compared with April 2007. London, Ontario recorded the largest gain in local movements, increasing by 8,232 movements (+391.3%) while Thunder Bay, Ontario reported 1,856 fewer movements (-40.3%) compared with April 2007.

Airports with NAV CANADA flight service stations

The 53 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA flight service stations reported 112,703 aircraft take-offs and landings in April, up 7.8% (8,179 movements) compared with April 2007. Year-over-year increases in aircraft movements were reported by 30 of these airports in April 2008. The variations ranged from a 287.9% increase (+4,834 movements) at Fredericton International, New Brunswick to a decline of -44.3% (-598 movements) at High Level, Alberta

Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) increased by 7.4% (+5,306 movements) in April compared with the same month a year earlier. Year-over-year variations in itinerant movements ranged from a 134.0% increase (+1,982 movements) at Fredericton International, New Brunswick to a decline of 29.6% (-283 movements) at Ottawa/Gatineau, Quebec.

Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded in April 2008 increased by 8.7% (+2,873 movements) compared with the same month a year earlier. Fredericton International, New Brunswick recorded the largest gain in local movements, increasing by 2,852 movements (+1,426.0%) compared with April 2007.
