Analysis

For the thirteenth consecutive month, aircraft take-offs and landings at Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations increased in year-over-year monthly comparisons. These 96 airports reported 564,370 movements in June 2007 compared with 530,917 movements at 97 airports in June 2006, an increase of 6.3% (+33,453 movements).

Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) increased by 2.1% (+8,282 movements) in June 2007 compared with the same month a year earlier.

Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) increased by 18.5% (+25,171 movements) in June 2007 compared with June 2006.

Airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers

The 42 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers reported 445,786 aircraft take-offs and landings in June, up 8.9% compared with June 2006 (409,285 movements). Year-over-year increases in aircraft movements were reported by 30 of the airports in June 2007. The variations ranged from 169.0% at Moncton/Greater Moncton International to -13.5% at St. John’s International.

Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) increased by 3.9% (+11,533 movements) in June compared with the same month a year earlier. Year-over-year variations in itinerant movements ranged from a 84.1% increase (+2,848 movements) at Moncton/Greater Moncton International to a decline of 13.5% (-568 movements) at Pitt Meadows, British Columbia.

Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) increased by 22.1% (+24,968 movements) in June compared with June 2006. Year-over-year variations in local movements ranged from a 464.0% increase (+4,519 movements) at Moncton/Greater Moncton International to a decline of 51.1% (-228 movements) at St. John’s International.

Airports with NAV CANADA flight service stations

The 54 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA flight service stations reported 118,584 aircraft take-offs and landings in June, down 2.5% compared with 55 flight service stations in June 2006 (121,632 movements). Year-over-year increases in aircraft movements were reported by 27 of these airports in June 2007. The variations ranged from a 49.1% increase (+723 movements) at Charlottetown to a decline of 50.8% (-2,385 movements) at La Ronge, Saskatchewan.

Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) decreased by 3.3% (-3,251 movements) in June compared with the same month a year earlier. Year-over-year variations in itinerant movements ranged from a 38.8% increase (+433 movements) at Port Hardy, British Columbia to a decline of 53.4% (-2,371 movements) at La Ronge.

Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded in June 2007 stayed at the level recorded a year earlier. Inuvik/Mike Zubko, Northwest Territories recorded the largest year-over-year variation in local movements, with a 350.0% increase (+133 movements) compared with June 2006.
