Analysis
Take-offs and landings at 128 Canadian airports without air traffic control towers reached a total of 63,543 movements in June. Ten airports accounted for 37% of the month’s activity: Peterborough, Ontario (6,543 movements), Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador (2,914), Barrie-Orillia-Lake Simcoe Regional, Ontario (1,977), Trois-Rivières, Quebec (1,897), Red Lake, Ontario (1,852), Comox, British Columbia (1,835), Drummondville, Quebec (1,695), Dawson, Yukon (1,687), Pickle Lake, Ontario (1,556) and Yorkton Municipal, Saskatchewan (1,501).
Total aircraft movements for the 119 airports for which year-over-year comparisons were possible decreased from 63,682 to 61,380 in June 2017 as 60 airports reported fewer movements. The largest decreases were recorded at the following airports: Peterborough (-1,541 movements), Tillsonburg, Ontario (-583) and Collingwood, Ontario (-499). Among those airports with increases, the largest gains were reported at Drummondville (+545) and Dawson (+487).
In June 2017, there were 46,975 itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) reported by 109 airports, with Goose Bay (2,914 movements) and Comox (1,835) recording the largest numbers.
Fifty-five airports reported 14,066 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport). Peterborough remained the most active site with 5,823 take-offs and landings, representing 41% of the total local movements reported.
