Description for Map
The title of this map is “Marine and coastal modifications: aquaculture sites and oil licenses, circa 2016-2020.” This map displays point data on two types of aquaculture sites, as well as ocean areas in with oil licenses.
On the page, there are four maps and a legend to the bottom right. The first map (top left) displays the entire country with inset boxes labeled A, B and C displaying the location of the other three maps. Map A (top right) displays part of the Arctic Ocean, Map B (bottom left) displays the West Coast and Map C (bottom right) displays the East Coast.
The legend categorizes aquaculture sites by type: finfish (red point) and shellfish (blue point). The legend categorizes oil license areas by type: exploration (yellow), production (purple) and significant discovery (pink). The legend also has two boundary categories: dashed lines indicate provincial boundaries and fine black lines indicate marine ecoregions.
The maps show that there are significant numbers of aquaculture sites in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, along the Nova Scotia coast, the Bonavista and Fogo areas in Newfoundland and in the Strait of Georgia and on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Oil license exploration and discovery licenses are densely located in the area to the north of the Yukon and offshore on the Newfoundland and Scotian shelves, with all production licenses occurring in the Atlantic offshore.
Notes: There has been a moratorium on oil exploration on the Pacific Coast of Canada since 1972 and for new activities on the Arctic Coast since 2016. As of 2019, all oil and gas activity is prohibited in Canadian Arctic offshore waters.
