Description for Map
The title of this map is “Marine and coastal extent: ecosystems and substrate; northern British Columbia coast.” This map provides a visual representation of the different ecosystems and substrate types along the northern coast of British Columbia.
On the page, there is one map and a legend to the upper right. The map displays the northern coast of British Columbia and includes bordering coastal regions of the state of Alaska.
The legend includes four ecosystem categories: seagrass meadow (pink), kelp forest (red), salt marsh (blue), coral and sponge (purple). The legend presents four substrate types: hard (bright green), mixed (taupe), soft (light teal) and unmapped (light blue). The legend also has a boundary category: fine black lines indicate marine ecoregions.
The map shows that the northern British Columbia coastline has a mixture of seagrass meadows, kelp forests and salt marshes while cold water coral and sponge patches are found in deeper waters. Hard substrate occurs mainly to the north and south of Haida Gwaii. Mixed areas of substrate are mainly close to the mainland, with soft substrate being the most common in the mapped area for Northern British Columbia.
