Map: Protected and conserved area extent, by ecoprovince and marine ecoregion depth class, 2020

Description for Map

The title of this map is “Protected and conserved area extent, by ecoprovince and marine ecoregion depth class, 2020.” This map displays the locations of protected and conserved areas in Canada, as well as the proportion of each ecoprovince and marine ecoregion depth class that is conserved.

On the page, there is one large map of Canada, two legends to the upper left and right and a scale bar to the bottom left. The map delineates ecoprovinces and marine ecoregions (by depth class) with fine lines.

The map shows the percentage of the area of each marine ecoregion depth class that is protected or conserved in varying shades of blue, with darker blue indicating a higher percentage. Similarly, the percentage of protected or conserved area of ecoprovinces is shown in varying shades of green, with darker green indicating a higher percentage.

The legend is split into two sections: percentage by marine ecoregion and depth class and percentage by ecoprovince. In the first section there are five categories: 0% to less than 1% (pale light blue), 1% to less than 10% (turquoise), 10% to less than 20% (blue), 20% to less than 40% (dark blue), and 40% to less than 100% (navy blue). In the second section there are five categories: 0% to less than 1% (white), 1% to less than 10% (mint green), 10% to less than 20% (green), 20% to less than 40% (forest green), and 40% to less than 100% (deep forest green). Locations of protected and conserved areas are shown as yellow polygons.

The map shows a general trend: there are higher proportions of protected or conserved area in western and northern ecoprovinces in Canada and over half of protected or conserved marine ecoregions are in the Arctic.

Notes: Protected and conserved areas have been divided into terrestrial and marine parts. Any overlap between protected and conserved areas has been removed to avoid double counting.
