Map 2.2
Forest type and forest area by ecozone 2006

Description for Map 2.2
The title of this map is "Forest type and forest area by ecozone, 2006." This map provides a visual representation of the proportion of each ecozone that is classified as forest area, as well as the distribution of forest types across Canada.
On this map, each colour represents a forest type. Category 1 (green) represents areas with coniferous forests, category 2 (pink) represents areas with broadleaf forests, category 3 (cream) represents areas with unidentified tree species and category 4 (white) indicates that there are no trees. The proportion of forest area in each ecozone is illustrated using a tree icon with the level of colouration representing the proportion, which is also displayed as a percentage value below the icon. Water is pale blue.
A solid black line defines ecozone boundaries. Ecozones are identified with numbers that correspond to named legend entries. Non-inventoried ecozones are white with a diagonal grey line—there is no data for these areas.
Coniferous forests are the main forest type across much of Canada, but particularly in the Pacific Maritime and Montane Cordillera ecozones in the west and the northern part of the Boreal Shield ecozone. Broadleaf forests occur throughout major parts of the Prairies, Mixedwood Plains and Boreal Plains ecozones, and to a lesser extent in the Atlantic Maritime, Taiga Plains and Boreal Shield ecozones. Ecozones with the highest percentages of forest area include the Atlantic Maritime, Boreal Shield and Montane Cordillera. Ecozones with the lowest percentages of forest area include the Prairies, Taiga Cordillera and the Mixedwood Plains.
Notes: This map provides a visual representation of the proportion of each ecozone that is classified as forest area, as well as the distribution of forest types across Canada. Non-inventoried land includes the Arctic ecozones (Arctic Cordillera, Northern Arctic, Southern Arctic) and small portions of the Taiga Plains and Hudson Plains ecozones located in Nunavut—areas that are largely devoid of tree cover. Areas where the dominant tree species was unidentified by the mapping technique generally have little tree cover.
