Includes protected areas administered federally, provincially and territorially, as well as Aboriginal or privately held conservation lands that are recognized by protected area agencies as being part of their network.

Includes a number of terrestrial protected areas that have a marine component totalling 28,995 km2.

Includes only land area. For example, when freshwater is included, the total area of the country is 9,984,670 km2.

Percent of land protected differs from the Canadian Protected Areas Status because only land area (not land and water) was used as referenced below.

Includes the terrestrial portion of Environment Canada's 28 Migratory Bird Sanctuaries that are found in Quebec, and the marine portion of these Sanctuaries (431 km2).

Includes 19 sites or 322 km2 of National Wildlife Areas and Migratory Bird Sanctuaries that are located in Ontario and administered by Environment Canada.

Excludes National Wildlife Area properties administered by Environment Canada, and 1,682 km2 of Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration pastures administered by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
