These industries include petroleum and coal products, paper, primary metals, non-metallic mineral products, chemicals and wood products. The petroleum and coal products manufacturing industry was by far the most energy-intensive industry in the manufacturing sector, consuming on average almost 200 terajoules of energy per million dollars of gross domestic product. In 2006, this industry had an energy intensity three times higher than the next most energy-intensive industry, paper manufacturing.
