Example of Index Calculation1

Below is a simplified dataset obtained for the Saskatchewan North River in Devon, Alberta. Ten variables are used in the index calculation (dissolved oxygen, pH, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, fecal coliforms, arsenic, lead, mercury, 2,4-D and lindane). The study period is the year 1997. Sampling frequency for this site is monthly for the majority of variables and quarterly for pesticides.

Index Calculation

The number of variable that do not comply with the guidelines is two (total phosphorus and lead), and the total number of variables is 10. Therefore,

Formula 11

The number of analytical results that do not comply with the guidelines is four. We have a total of 103 analytical results. In this case,

Formula 12

The excursions, their normalized sum and the term F3 are calculated as follows:

Formula 13

Once the three factors have been established, we can calculate the index value:

Formula 14

Therefore, the CCME WQI indicates that water quality in the North Saskatchewan River at Devon was good in 1997.
