A household is considered to be in core housing needNote  if its dwelling is unsuitable (not enough bedrooms for its size and make-up), inadequate (needs major repairs) or unaffordable (costs more than 30% of its before-tax income) and it cannot afford alternative local housing that is acceptable.

The prevalence of core housing need has been consistently shown to be high among First Nations people living off reserve, Métis and Inuit in Canada.Note 

In 2022, 14.6% of First Nations people living off reserve, Métis and Inuit in Canada were in core housing need, versus 9.1% of the overall Canadian population living in the provinces.
