The volume and severity of crime, as measured by the Crime Severity Index (CSI),Note 1 decreased for the first time in four years, down 4% in 2024. The Non-violent CSI (-6%) and the Violent CSI (-1%) both decreased, with non-violent crime having the largest impact on the overall CSI. Annual changes in the crime rate, or the volume of crime, have been similar to the CSI over time.

In 2024, there were 788 victims of homicide, 8 fewer than in 2023.
Gang-related homicides accounted for about one-fifth (19%) of all homicides; 79% of these were committed with a firearm, most often a handgun.
The proportion of women who were killed by their spouse or intimate partner was approximately 7 times higher than the proportion of men (42% versus 6%).Note 3
4,882 hate crime incidents
- The number of police-reported hate crimes rose 1%. Hate crimes targeting a religion were stable, while those targeting a sexual orientation decreased 26% and those targeting a race or an ethnicity increased 8%.
