Data on retail trades in this article are not seasonally adjusted unless otherwise stated. To minimize the effect of seasonality, growth is computed relative to the same period of the previous year. Seasonally adjusted GDP was lower in the fourth quarter of 2008 relative to both the third quarter of 2008 and the fourth quarter of 2007. Seasonally adjusted employment was down relative to the third quarter of 2008 but up relative to the fourth quarter of 2007. The Quarterly Retail Commodity Survey collects national level retail sales by commodity, from a sub-sample of businesses in the Monthly Retail Trade Survey.
