Do you need top-level, summary statistics?Search these six products first: Canadian Statistics and Canada e-Book Canadian Statistics and Canada e-Book
Canadian Statistics provides a selection of free data tables on a wide variety of topics, from agriculture to wholesale trade. A search engine offers access to the data, which may be browsed by subject, by province or metropolitan area.
The Canada e-Book uses many of the tables from Canadian Statistics–along with additional charts, pictures and audio clips–to make the statistical information come alive through short articles. Again, a search engine is available, and browsing is offered through a drop-down menu on the left hand side of the page.
The DailyThe Daily is Statistics Canada's official release bulletin and first line of communication with the media and the public. Every weekday morning since 1932, The Daily has issued news releases on current social and economic conditions and announces new products. It provides a free comprehensive overview of new information available from Statistics Canada. The Daily can be searched by its own search tool, and previous issues can be selected by date. An email version can also be obtained by free subscription.
The Census and Community ProfilesConducted every five years, the census is a reliable source for describing the characteristics of Canada's people, dwellings and agricultural operations.
The Census of Population provides the population and dwelling counts not only for Canada but also for each province and territory, and for smaller geographic units such as cities or districts within cities. The census collects information about Canada's demographic, social and economic characteristics. Census data can primarily be searched by topic or by geography; more in-depth searching can be completed by using the menu on the left hand side of the page. The Census of Agriculture collects a wide range of data on the agriculture industry, providing a comprehensive picture of the agriculture industry across Canada. In addition, the unique Agriculture-Population Linkage Database, which links data from both the Census of Population and Census of Agriculture, paints a socio-economic portrait not only of farm operators but also of their families and households. Information is arranged according to seven major subject areas for ease of browsing. Community Profiles presents the information obtained through the 2001 Census by various cities, towns, regions and Indian reserves. Through searching a community name, free statistics relevant to that community are provided—population, education, families, income, religion and much more.
Information on the 2006 Census will be updated as released at: http://www12.statcan.ca/english/census06/index.cfm
Browse by subjectQuite often, users want to browse through a specific subject area to see what statistics are available. Browse by subject offers access to a variety of free- and fee-based information. The Online Catalogue of Products and ServicesThe Online Catalogue of Products and Services provides access to more than 6,500 current publications and research papers, both print and electronic, as well as custom tabulations and other services which are available. Product and service descriptions, prices (if applicable) and downloading options are given. Help on searching the Online Catalogue is available on the site or by clicking here.
Statistics Canada Website SearchThe Statistics Canada Website Search explores text on the actual website itself. Information available on the website but not produced as a publication could be found here. For example, the Canada Quiz which is on the Statistics Canada Website is an interactive quiz that challenges your knowledge of Canadian statistics. As it is a web-based tool, it would be available through the Website Search and not the Online Catalogue. Help on searching the Website is available by clicking the HELP button or by clicking here.
