Learning Resources

Learning Resources
Whether you are an elementary, high school, college or university student—or a teacher—a wealth of resources awaits you in the Learning Resources module. The Kids Zone helps make statistics information interesting and useful for those finishing homework assignments. Services for post-secondary students are also listed, as well as numerous lesson plans and teaching aids for educators. The module provides a search engine to locate relevant information quickly and easily.

E-STAT

E-STAT is Statistics Canada's interactive learning tool designed with the needs and interests of the education community in mind. E-STAT offers an enormous warehouse of statistics about Canada and its ever-changing population. E-STAT data is complemented by text. Students can access selected articles from Statistics Canada publications such as Canadian Social Trends, Health Reports, Human Activity and the Environment, Juristat and many others. Access is by school registration only; you can check if your school is registered with the program here.

Data Liberation Initiative (DLI)

Since 1996, the DLI has provided a cost effective method for improving data resources for Canadian post-secondary institutions. Prior to the start of the DLI program, Canadian universities and colleges had to purchase Statistics Canada data one file at a time. With the advent of the DLI, participating post-secondary institutions pay an annual subscription fee that allows their faculty and students unlimited access to numerous Statistics Canada public use microdata files, databases and geographic files. Access is by institution licensing only; you can check if your school is a DLI participant here.

Research Data Centres (RDC)

The Research Data Centres program is part of an initiative by Statistics Canada, the Social Science and Humanities Research Council and university consortia to help strengthen Canada's social research capacity and to support the policy research community.

RDCs provide researchers with access, in a secure university setting, to microdata from population and household surveys. The centres are staffed by Statistics Canada employees. They are operated under the provisions of the Statistics Act in accordance with all the confidentiality rules and are accessible only to researchers with approved projects who have been sworn in under the Statistics Act as 'deemed employees.'  RDCs are located throughout the country, so researchers do not need to travel to Ottawa to access Statistics Canada microdata.
