Chart 1  Second language learners tend to be much younger than people who learned an Aboriginal language as their mother tongue

This chart illustrates the percentage of the population speaking an Aboriginal language, depending on whether that language is their mother tongue or a second language. Among those who learned it as their mother tongue, 38% were under 25 years of age, 32% were aged 25 to 44, and 30% were aged 45 or older. Among those who learned as a second language, 45% were under 25 years of age, 33% were aged 25 to 44, and 22% were aged 45 or older. These data are from the 2001 Census of Population.
