Chart 1. Over the generations, the most common reasons for leaving home have changed.

This chart shows vertical bar clusters for each of the following generations: War/Depression cohort, Wave 1 Boomers, Wave 2 Boomers, Generation X and Generation Y. Each cluster consists of 4 verticals bars that show the percentage of that generation that first left home to attend school, because of a job, to get married or live with a partner, and to be independent or move into their own place. The chart shows that for the two oldest generations, the plurality of children left home to get married; for the following two generations (Wave 2 Boomers and Generation X), the proportion leaving to marry shrinks and the proportion leaving to be independent becomes the cheif reason for leaving home.
