Chart 1. Males were almost four times more likely than females to be referred to court

This line graph illustrates the age of members of the study cohort at the time of their first offence. The male line in the graph shows a steady rise in the percentage of the male cohort as they age from 12 to 18 years; it then falls sharply to age 21. The female line shows an increase from age 12 to age 15 in the proportion of the cohort first appearing in court; the line then declines.
