The projections cover the 2001 to 2017 period and show the contribution of the Aboriginal groups to the general demographic profile of Canada in 2017, the 150th anniversary of its Confederation. The report includes a description of the model used to produce the projections, assumptions which were developed for the future evolution of fertility, mortality and migration of the Aboriginal groups, and the major conclusions from the analysis of five projection scenarios.

The 2017 APS represents the fifth cycle of the survey and focuses on issues of transferable skills, practical training, use of information technology, Aboriginal language attainment, and participation in the Canadian economy. The 2017 APS public use microdata file (PUMF) package has been designed to enable users to access and manipulate survey microdata at the national level. The package includes a microdata file; SAS, SPSS and Stata syntax; and a users' guide. The users' guide provides general information on the survey as well as guidelines for releasing estimates calculated using the PUMF.

The tool will help visualize statistics on methods of looking for work, reasons for difficulty in finding work and what would help most in finding work for a specific sub-group and region. This tool is expected to enhance the uptake of information that will be published in the accompanying report: "Self-reported barriers and facilitators of labour force participation among First Nations people living off reserve, Métis, and Inuit: findings from the 2017 Aboriginal Peoples Survey".
