Analysis

This study examines perinatal outcomes among First Nations, Inuit and Métis. The objective is to describe and compare rates of preterm birth, small-for-gestational age birth, large-for-gestational age birth, stillbirth and infant mortality in the three Indigenous groups and the non-Indigenous population.

This analysis classifies people aged 50 or older as high hospital users, non-high users, or not hospitalized and compares the socioeconomic characteristics, health outcomes, health behaviours, and hospital experiences of the three groups.

The year 2013 had 252,338 deaths as compared to 380,323 births. Key statistics about those deaths are presented in this infographic, Mortality Trends in Canada, 2013. These include the percentage of deaths at age 65 and age 85, the seasonality of deaths, the life expectancy at birth and difference between male and female, as well as an analysis of infant mortality.

Each issue of Health at a Glance consists of a short non-technical article on topics that feature statistics from health-related surveys and administrative data.

This fact sheet presents the age-standardized mortality rates and analyzes the trends in mortality rates since 2000, with emphasis on the leading causes of death.

Statistics shown in this fact sheet come from vital statistics Canadian death database. These data are collected from all provincial and territorial vital statistics registries and contain demographic and medical (cause of death) information on all deaths in Canada.

The chapter entitled "Women in Canada: The Girl Child" explores the diverse circumstances and experiences of girls aged 17 and under. The chapter describes the demographic characteristics of girls in Canada and presents several topics related to their well-being including: living arrangements, socioeconomic conditions, physical health and development, mortality, emotional and social health and development, child care, school readiness, education, and personal security. Where possible, comparisons are made between girls in different age groups, between girls and boys, and within several subpopulations.
