This article profiles the diamond mining industry in Canada, with a special emphasis on the Northwest Territories (NWT). This new industry is contributing substantially to growth in gross domestic product, investment, international trade and government revenues. It also has an affect on employment, since jobs within this industry tend to pay high salaries. New diamond mines are under development and diamond exploration is expanding in Nunavut, Ontario and other provinces.

Household Internet use is lower outside Canada's top 15 census metropolitan areas (CMAs). This result holds even after we account for some major factors associated with rurality that are also associated with lower Internet use, such as an older population with lower educational attainment and lower incomes. Thus, rurality appears to be an independent constraint on household Internet use. Entrepreneurs outside the top 15 CMAs are not using the Internet to overcome distance. In fact, the self-employed in the top 15 CMAs are more likely to use the Internet. On the positive side, children outside the top 15 CMAs may be in a relatively advantageous position. Households outside the top 15 CMAs with children under 18 years of age are more likely to access the Internet compared with similar households in the top 15 CMAs.

Recent studies have shown that fewer rural Canadians were using the Internet than urban Canadians, despite new developments in information and communication technologies (ICTs) (Thompson-James 1999, McLaren 2002). The growth of the Internet has been portrayed as an innovative medium for the exchange of information, which could provide new opportunities to rural Canadians. The purpose of this study is to estimate and to analyse the determinants of Internet use by Canadians in order to understand the factors associated with lower Internet use in rural Canada, with specific emphasis on whether 'rurality' acts as an independent factor on Internet use.

The need for Information Technology (IT) support has never been greater than it is today. Businesses, institutions, government and individuals all rely heavily on IT networks to convey information, process data, and provide or access services.

This paper describes how a leading IT industry, including computer systems design and related services, has responded to the mounting demand for IT services in Canada. Structural differences between small and large system design firms are explored and data describing industry growth rates, export markets, and employment characteristics are examined.

Services constitute the single most important industry in Canada's economy, with 68% of total gross domestic product, 75% of employment and 53% of consumer spending. However, this industry is not widely perceived as being Canada's spearhead of research and development (R&D), a role more traditionally assigned to the manufacturing sector. Still, services are becoming an increasingly important force in R&D, and this is why we should reconsider the true role played by R&D in the service sector. This article, in fact, sets out to quantify R&D activities within the service sector.

Here are some highlights of this exploratory study:

- In 2002, the commercial service sector was responsible for 28.5% of all R&D expenditures for the economy as a whole.

- In 2000, 36.6% of all personnel assigned full time to R&D worked in the commercial service sector.

- Quantification of the amounts spent on R&D from within the service sector does not necessarily correspond to traditional industrial classifications. For example, R&D is primarily performed in such sectors as biotechnology, software, telecommunications, the environment and logistics, which are not included in the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) classification scheme.

- Several service sector activities are very labour intensive and require highly skilled R&D workers. For example, of all employees performing R&D in the field of biotechnology, 23% hold doctorates or master's degrees.

Even though all of the campgrounds and outfitters combined were self-categorized as midscale accommodations, 87% of the campgrounds catered to an economy/midscale market while around 84% of the outfitters were midscale/upscale. Only outfitters derived more revenue from packaged vacations than from guest units. Americans made up the greatest number of those visiting Canada's hunting and fishing camps while campgrounds generated most of their business from Canadian travellers. Canada's pristine wilderness draws foreign travellers who want to experience world-class hunting and fishing expeditions.

Description: The first assesses how the fertility of immigrant women evolved between 1976-1981 and 1996-2001. It examines whether the fertility behaviour of immigrant women is tending to converge with that of Canadian-born women, and if so, how rapidly this is occurring for different immigrant groups. Description: This Juristat article uses data from the 2022/2023 Survey of Residential Facilities for Victims of Abuse (SRFVA) to present results on residential facilities in Canada that are primarily mandated to serve victims of abuse. Results presented in this article refer to two distinct time periods. The first focuses on a 12-month period within 2022/2023, and provides an overview of facility characteristics, touching on shelter admissions, availability of accommodations, and general services provided. The second focuses on information for a predetermined snapshot date of April 13, 2023, and presents a profile of residents using residential facilities on this date.

What are the impacts of this unpaid caregiving on well-being, especially the gendered differences?

Description: In collaboration with the Bank of Canada, this research paper focuses on constructing analytical price index series for Canada, using the main owned accommodation measurement concepts proposed by the International Consumer Price Index Manual and adopted by other countries. This analysis explores these alternative treatments of owned accommodation in the Canadian context, examining their impact on the all-items Consumer Price Index. Additionally, it provides an explanation for the gap between perceived inflation and estimated inflation.

Description: The agricultural sector in Canada has relied increasingly on temporary foreign workers (TFWs) to fill the longstanding labour shortage. The number of TFWs in crop production, animal production and aquaculture, and support activities for crop and animal production more than tripled between 2005 and 2020. This study examines the transition to permanent residency (PR) of TFWs in primary agriculture and the retention in the sector among those who obtained PR. The study focuses on TFWs whose first employment was in primary agriculture and who entered the sector between 2005 and 2020.

Description: A key component of Canada’s immigration program is to promote the balanced geographic distribution of immigrants and refugees across Canada. This study asks whether there were significant differences in the economic outcomes of government assisted refugees (GARs), based on the size of the city to which they were designated. The analysis was conducted for both those remaining in the designated cities (stayers) and those moving to other locations (movers).

To that end, when enough time has passed to allow for sufficient objectivity, it will again be time to document the agency’s next chapter as it continues to tell Canada’s story in numbers.

Description: This publication presents an overview of recent economic developments in the provinces and territories. The overview covers several broad areas: 1) gross domestic product (GDP) by income and by expenditure, 2) GDP by industry, 3) labour productivity and other related variables.

The publication examines trends in the major aggregates that comprise GDP, both income- and expenditure-based, as well as prices and the financing of economic activity by institutional sector. GDP is also examined by industry. The productivity estimates are meant to assist in the analysis of the short-run relationship among the fluctuations of output, employment, compensation and hours worked. Some issues also contain more technical articles, explaining national accounts methodology or analysing a particular aspect of the economy.
