    Description:

This Juristat article examines a cohort of individuals who died of an illicit drug overdose in the province of British Columbia, with a special focus on the City of Surrey, between 2011 and 2016, and explores the nature and extent of their contact with the criminal justice system as a person accused of a crime. This analysis brings together data provided by the British Columbia Coroners Service with policing data from the Uniform Crime Reporting Survey, and criminal court data from the Integrated Criminal Court Survey. Identifying the primary risk factors and those at greatest risk of preventable illicit drug-related deaths will help support the development of evidence-informed interventions, precision programming and policies aimed at preventing future overdoses and saving lives.

    Description:

This study uses the new remoteness index (RI) classification, which assigns a value to each census subdivision (CSD) and measures the relative remoteness of Canadian communities on the basis of their size and their proximity to surrounding population centres, to distinguish rural and remote areas from urban areas in Canada. The Canadian Vital Statistics-Death Database (2011 to 2015), and the 2016 Census of Population are also used in this study to examine major causes of both preventable and treatable mortality by relative remoteness of Canadian communities. It explores the interrelationship between remoteness and avoidable mortality while taking into account three important variables: average household income after-tax, the proportion of postsecondary graduates and the proportion of Aboriginal population by CSD.

    Description:

Administered in 2013, the Canadian Forces Mental Health Survey (CFMHS) included the same set of items to assess coping as the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) and the CCHS-Canadian Forces Supplement. This study's objectives were to (1) provide a descriptive analysis of the extent to which members of the CAF Regular Force use these various coping strategies, (2) examine the factorial structure of these items, and (3) assess the resulting coping factors by examining their concurrent validity with theoretically-related indicators and examining differences along key demographic and military characteristics. Ultimately, the study aimed to shed light onto a coping typology that could guide the development of indicators for use in future coping research based on the CFMHS.

  • Articles and reports: 11F0019M2019014
    Description:

Canada has a relatively large foreign-born population, and the country’s economic prosperity depends on international trade. This paper examines how these two characteristics are linked. Specifically, it investigates the effect of immigrant business ownership on international trade in Canada.

Understanding the impact of immigrants on international trade is particularly important for Canada, as it is a small open economy with a relatively large immigrant population. This paper empirically investigates the effect of immigrant business ownership on international trade in Canada using a newly developed firm-level database with detailed business ownership and trade information. The new data make it possible to better distinguish between the effect immigrants have on reducing information costs and on product demand, and to assess the impact of immigrant business ownership on the extensive and intensive margins of international trade.
