    This paper discusses in detail issues dealing with the technical aspects of designing and conducting surveys. It is intended for an audience of survey methodologists.

    To fill statistical gaps in the areas of health determinants, health status and health system usage by the Canadian population at the health region levels (sub-provincial areas or regions of interest to health authorities), Statistics Canada established a new survey called the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS). The CCHS consists of two separate components: a regional survey in the first year and a provincial survey in the second year. The main purpose of the regional survey, for which collection took place between September 2000 and October 2001, was to produce cross-sectional estimates for 136 health regions in Canada, based on a sample of more than 134,000 respondents. This article focuses on the various measures taken at the time of data collection to ensure a high level of quality for this large-scale survey.

  • 2. A better understanding of weight transformation through a measure of change Archived

    The objective of this paper is to study and measure the change (from the initial to the final weight) which results from the procedure used to modify weights. A breakdown of the final weights is proposed in order to evaluate the relative impact of the nonresponse adjustment, the correction for poststratification and the interaction between these two adjustments. This measure of change is used as a tool for comparing the effectiveness of the various methods for adjusting for nonresponse, in particular the methods relying on the formation of Response Homogeneity Groups. The measure of change is examined through a simulation study, which uses data from a Statistics Canada longitudinal survey, the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics. The measure of change is also applied to data obtained from a second longitudinal survey, the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth.

    In 1993, Statistics Canada implemented Computer-assisted Interviewing (CAI) for conducting interviews for some household surveys that were conducted in a decentralised environment. The technology has been successfully used for a number of years, and most household surveys have now been converted to this collection mode. This paper is a summary of the experience and the lessons that have been learned since the research started. It described some of the tests that led to the implementation of the technology, and some of the new opportunities that have arisen with its implementation. It also discusses some challenges that were faced when CAI was implemented (some are on-going issues), and ends with a brief overview of where this may lead us in the future.

    Household surveys generally use separate procedures for estimating characteristics of persons and those of families. An integrated procedure is proposed and a least-squares estimator introduced to achieve this end. The estimator is shown to be unbiased under certain general conditions. Using data from the Canadian Labour Force Survey, variances for the estimator are calculated and shown to compare favourably to those from current procedures.

How are the results ordered?

The Sort by feature provides three options:

  • By date – sorts results by product release date starting with the most recent.
  • By relevance is only needed or beneficial when you use the search box and submit a search query. Results are ordered by a combination of where the search term appears in the content, e.g., if it appears in the title, it likely means the product is more relevant to your search; how up to date or new the content in the product is; how popular the product is; and other factors.
  • By title – sorts results alphabetically.
