    Description:

    Increasing women’s participation in male-dominated trades has been identified as a means of improving the supply of skilled tradespersons in Canada, creating a more diverse workforce, and increasing women’s wages. However, little information exists about women’s decision to enter male-dominated apprenticeship programs and their subsequent labour market outcomes. This study addresses both information gaps by examining the characteristics associated with women selecting male-dominated apprenticeship programs and their labour market outcomes relative to men who selected the same types of programs.

    This article examines trends in registered apprenticeship training in Canada over the 1991 to 2009 period, using information from the Registered Apprenticeship Information System (RAIS). Though data are available for all 22 major trade groups, this article focuses on the top four in terms of total number of apprentices in 2009: electricians, carpenters, automotive service technicians, and plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters. The analysis first looks at trends in the total number of apprenticeship registrations for each of these four major trade groups and then discusses trends in new registrations, completions and discontinuations.

    This article draws a profile of trade qualifiers in 2007, using data from the Registered Apprenticeship Information System (RAIS). A trade qualifier is a person who has not completed an apprenticeship program but has acquired enough practical work experience to write the examination to obtain the certificate of qualification (or certificate of competence) issued by the provincial or territorial authorities responsible for certifying trades workers. Trade qualifiers accounted for 43% of certificates of qualification issued in the apprenticeable trades in 2007.

    This report looks at completion and discontinuation rates of registered apprentices using two longitudinal cohorts created from the Registered Apprenticeship Information System (RAIS). These cohorts comprised registered apprentices who first enrolled in an apprenticeship program in 1994 or in 1995.

    The purpose of the study is to provide measures of completion of apprenticeship programs and information on the learning paths of the apprentices tracked over an 11-year period. It follows two other reports published in 2005 and in 2008, which examined the same issues. In those studies, results for three provinces - New Brunswick, Ontario and Alberta - were analyzed for the cohorts of new apprenticeship enrolees in the years 1992 and 1993. The current report includes three new provinces: Quebec, Manitoba and British Columbia.

    Completion and discontinuation are discussed in relation to the age of the apprentices, major trade groups, nominal duration of programs, time spent in the program for completers and discontinuers and whether or not the trade was covered by the Red Seal Interprovincial Standards Program. Detailed data tables provide information for individual trades in each of the six provinces.

    Workers at the low end of the earnings scale, workers with less education, non-unionized workers and women are all less likely than other workers to receive employer-sponsored training. But they are also less likely to decline it when it is offered. Within each of the first three categories, women lag behind men in receiving training. Controlling for various individual, job and workplace characteristics helps explain some of these persistent labour market differences between men and women.

    Description:

    The Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) is used for classifying instructional programs according to field of study. CIP was originally created by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) in the United States. It is a hierarchical classification. CIP Canada is the adaptation of this classification for use in Canada. CIP Canada 2016 is made up of 49 2-digit series, 387 4-digit subseries and 1,689 6-digit instructional program classes. The classification provides a detailed description of each instructional program class together with illustrative examples of the types of instructional programs found in that class. Illustrative examples are also provided of closely related programs that are classified elsewhere. In addition, the classification includes an introduction to CIP and an alternative structure for the aggregation of field of study data. CIP has a ten-year revision cycle.

    Description: This survey, which was conducted in 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1989, identified the number of Alberta-registered apprentices and Alberta-certified journeymen who were active in their trade, as well as the trades in which they were active. The 1989 survey also identified the number of apprentices and journeymen willing to work fewer hours per week at the same hourly rate but with an equal reduction in pay and benefits.
