This Juristat examines the case histories and correctional outcomes of adults under provincial correctional supervision in Saskatchewan during the years 1999/00 through 2003/04. This is the first report analyzing data from the newly implemented Integrated Correctional Services Survey (ICSS). It provides an analysis of characteristics of persons supervised in correctional services, and a description of their involvement, any re-involvements, as well as a comparative analysis of these characteristics between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal persons. Several cohorts of persons released from supervised correctional activity in Saskatchewan are analyzed regarding their return to correctional services as well as the relationship between these re-involvements and various demographic, case history and criminal justice factors.

This issue of Juristat presents statistical information on the extent and nature of violent victimization of children and youth in Canada in 2003 as reported to a subset of police services. Rates of victimization are presented for each age and sex. Data describes the different types of assaults perpetrated against children and youth, the weapons used to inflict injury, the injuries sustained and the location and time of the assault relative to various age groups. Other topics included in the report are child pornography, sexual exploitation of children, kidnapping and abduction of children. Data used in this report include police statistics from the Incident-based Uniform Crime Reporting Survey, the Homicide Survey and court data from the Adult Criminal Court Survey.

The annual Juristat, Adult Criminal Court Statistics, 2003/04 summarizes trends from provincial/territorial adult criminal courts across Canada, which provided data to the Adult Criminal Court Survey for the 2003/04 fiscal year.

This Juristat presents information on the characteristics of cases and accused persons, the number of appearances, the percentage of guilty cases, sentencing trends and related issues. Statistics are also presented for the 5 years 1999/00 through 2003/04 as well as the 10 years 1994/95 through 2003/04.

This report, based on data from the 2002/03 Victim Services Survey, provides a profile of victim service agencies in Canada and the clients they served. Data are presented on the types of agencies in Canada, the services offered, staff and volunteers, criminal injuries compensation applications and awards, and client characteristics such as sex, age grouping and type of victimization.

The report also contains some information on transition homes and shelters for abused women and their children that was collected by Statistics Canada's 2001/2002 Transition Home Survey.

The federal government and the provincial and territorial governments share the administration of correctional services in Canada, which include custody (sentenced custody, remand and other temporary detention) and community-based sentences (probation, conditional sentences) as well as statutory release and parole supervision. Correctional services agencies at both levels work toward the same goal, that is, the protection of society as well as the rehabilitation of offenders and their safe reintegration into communities as productive members.

This Juristat reports on data from the Adult Correctional Services Survey for the 2002/03 fiscal year, and shows trends as far back as 1993/94. It examines average counts of adults who have been incarcerated, who were under community supervision on probation, serving a conditional sentence or on conditional release (parole and statutory release). The number of admissions to these programs, the offences leading to the admission, the duration of the incarceration or probation, as well as some offender characteristics, such as age, sex and Aboriginal identity are also described. Furthermore, the cost of correctional services in 2002/03, broken down by type of activity and level of government is examined. The average daily inmate costs and daily offender costs of those in community supervision from 1993/94 to 2002/03, as well as the number of correctional institutions in Canada in 2002/03 are reported.

This Juristat provides an overview of young offenders in correctional service programs in Canada in 2002/03. The data in the report represent the final year of youth corrections under the Young Offenders Act as the new Youth Criminal Justice Act came into effect on April 1, 2003.

The data are drawn from three sources: the Youth Key Indicator Report, the Youth Custody and Community Services Survey and the Alternative Measures Survey. Data from all these sources are analysed at the provincial/territorial and national levels.

Analysis is based on police-reported crime data from the 2001 Incident-based Uniform Crime Reporting Survey, the 2001 Census of Population, and City of Winnipeg land-use data.

Description: The purpose of this is to collect data on residential services for abused and at-risk youth (aged 16 to 29) during the previous 12 months, as well as to provide a one-day "snapshot" of the clientele being served on a specific date.

Description: The purpose of this survey is to collect national-level data on the prevalence and types of fraud experienced by certain business sectors. These data are required to respond to the need for better information on the nature and extent of fraud in Canada in order to improve policy and public education with respect to this issue. The survey also collects information on fraud detection and prevention and actions taken in response to incidents of fraud, including use of the criminal justice system.

Description: The purpose of the Survey on Sexual Misconduct in the Canadian Armed Forces (SSMCAF) is to collect information about the prevalence and nature of inappropriate sexual behaviour within the military, the reporting of inappropriate sexual behaviour to authorities, military members' perception of the Canadian Armed Forces' (CAF) response to this issue and CAF's progress in addressing sexual misconduct in the ranks.

Description: The National Fire Information Database (NFID) is a pilot project with the objective of gathering ten years of microdata information on fire incidents and fire losses from provincial/territorial Fire Marshals and Fire Commissioners Offices across Canada, standardizing the data, and creating a centralized national system for the collection of fire statistics.
