Description: Remote Sensing and Geospatial Analysis (RSGA) of the Agriculture Division prepared a series of maps and statistics that show the progression of the 2009 Red River valley flood in Manitoba for the spring of 2009. Starting with an image acquired on March 31, the maps were produced from the analysis of Radarsat-2 satellite image data integrated with 2006 Census of Agriculture data and census geography boundary files. From this analysis, the total area of flooded agriculture land and the number of farmers affected were calculated. A comparison is made with the 1997 flood that occurred in the same region.

  • Articles and reports: 11-522-X20050019439
    Description:

The data collection process is becoming increasingly more challenging due to a number of factors, including: ageing of the farm population, decreasing number of farmers, increasing farm sizes, financial crises arising from BSE (mad cow disease) and the avian influenza, and from extreme climatic impacts causing drought conditions in some areas and flooding in others. There also seems to be rising levels of concern about privacy and confidentiality. This paper will describe how agriculture is an industry in transition, how difficulties faced by the agricultural sector impact data collection issues, and how our subsequent responses and actions are addressing these challenging issues.

    Description:

The Whole Farm Database is the product of a joint venture between Agriculture and Agri- Food Canada and Statistics Canada. The Whole Farm Database (WFDB) provides a set of physical and financial data at the whole farm level by compiling data from various surveys and administrative sources. As a result, for example, one can obtain farm revenue and expenditure data disaggregated by farm type, revenue class and subprovincial area.

There are three major data sources currently offered on the Whole Farm Data Base (WFDB): the Canadian Agricultural Income Stabilization and Taxation Data Program (CAIS/TDP), the Farm Financial Survey (FFS) and the Crop and Livestock Surveys. Although the WFDB can be used to produce estimates for selected domains regardless of the revenue level, the base is primarily structured to provide data for farms with reported revenues of $10,000 and over.

Canadian Agricultural Income Stabilization and Taxation Data Program

Data are collected from an annual survey of Canada Revenue Agency tax returns of unincorporated and incorporated farms. Data are available for itemized revenues, expenses, and acquisitions and dispositions of depreciable assets. Also available are, sources and levels of farm and off-farm income for unincorporated operators and farm families. Available by subprovincial region, farm type and revenue class. Historical data is available back to 1987.

    Farm Financial Survey

This survey, and its predecessor the Farm Credit Corporation Survey, provides estimates on capital investments and sales, assets and liabilities, and long-term capital borrowed. Details are available by subprovincial region, farm type and revenue class. Data are available for reference years 1987, 1989, 1991,1992 (Prairie provinces and British Columbia),1993 and every second year until 2001. Since 2001, the data has been available on an annual basis.

    Crop and Livestock Surveys

Estimates from an annual sample of Canadian farmers include detailed cropland acreage and livestock inventories. Available by subprovincial region, farm type and revenue class starting in 1993.

Description: Statistics Canada conducts the Census of Agriculture to develop a statistical portrait of Canada's farms and its agricultural operators. Every five years, the Census of Agriculture provides a comprehensive and integrated profile of the physical, economic, social and environmental aspects of Canada's agriculture industry; it is the only data source that consistently provides high-quality detailed statistical information on agriculture for small geographic areas. It collects a wide range of data at the national, provincial and subprovincial levels, such as the number of farms and farm operators, farm area, farm size, farm type, land use, crop areas, land management practices, livestock inventories, business operating arrangements, farm operating revenues, farm operating expenses, farm capital, and farm machinery. The Census of Agriculture not only provides a snapshot in time of the agriculture industry, but is also essential for understanding changes over time, thus serving as a basis for informed public and private decision making.
