Description: The 2018 Cannabis Act legalizing the production, sale, and use of cannabis for non-medical purposes renewed interest in the importance of ongoing and more detailed monitoring of cannabis consumption and consequences. Some cannabis users will experience impaired control over their use of cannabis, putting them at risk for cannabis use disorder (sometimes called addiction) and other harms. Using the Severity of Dependence Scale in the annual Canadian Community Health Survey, this study examines cannabis consumers with and without impaired control.

Description: Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are a major public health concern impacting the lives of many Canadians. Among all TBIs, concussions are the most common. However, to date, the incidence of concussions among the Canadian population has remained unknown. To address this data surveillance gap, this study presents national estimates on the percentage of Canadians aged 12 years or older (excluding those living in the territories) who sustained one or more concussions in 2019.

Description: To date, population estimates of hypertension prevalence among children and adolescents in Canada have been based on clinical guidelines in the National High Blood Pressure Education Program’s 2004 Fourth Report on the Diagnosis, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure in Children and Adolescents (NHBPEP 2004). In 2017, the American Academy of Pediatrics published updated guidelines in Clinical Practice Guideline for Screening and Management of High Blood Pressure in Children and Adolescents (AAP 2017), followed by Hypertension Canada in 2020 with its publication of Comprehensive Guidelines for the Prevention, Diagnosis, Risk Assessment, and Treatment of Hypertension in Adults and Children (HC 2020). This is the first study in Canada to compare the national estimates of the prevalence of child and adolescent hypertension based on AAP 2017 with estimates of prevalence based on NHBPEP 2004 and HC 2020. The main objectives of this analysis were to apply AAP 2017 and HC 2020 to all six cycles of Canadian Health Measures Survey data available to date and examine the effect on population estimates of hypertension prevalence by sex and age group among children and adolescents aged 6 to 17. This study also examines the impact of applying AAP 2017 across time and selected characteristics, describes those who are reclassified into a higher BP category under AAP 2017, and examines differences in hypertension prevalence resulting from applying HC 2020 versus AAP 2017.

While it is a geographically-based index of deprivation and marginalization, it can also be used as a proxy for an individual. The CIMD has the potential to be widely used by researchers on a variety of topics related to socio-economic research. The mandate of the Analytical Studies Branch (ASB) is to provide high-quality, relevant and timely information on economic, health and social issues that are important to Canadians. The branch strategically makes use of expert knowledge and a large range of statistical sources to describe, draw inferences from, and make objective and scientifically supported deductions about the evolving nature of the Canadian economy and society. Research questions are addressed by applying leading-edge methods, including microsimulation and predictive analytics using a range of linked and integrated administrative and survey data. In supporting greater access to data, ASB linked data are made available to external researchers and policy makers to support evidence-based decision making. Research results are disseminated by the branch using a range of mediums (i.e., research papers, studies, infographics, videos, and blogs) to meet user needs. The branch also provides analytical support and training, feedback, and quality assurance to the wide range of programs within and outside Statistics Canada.

This paper describes the process that led to the creation of the new Disability Screening Questions (DSQ), jointly developped by Statistics Canada and Employment and Social Development Canada. The DSQ form a new module which can be put on general population surveys to allow comparisons of persons with and without a disability. The paper explains why there are two versions of the DSQ—a long and a short one—, the difference between the two, and how each version can be used.
