Description: Sexual health education delivered in school, provided by parents, or provided by other formal sources has been associated with increased rates of condom use and improvements in many other sexual risk behaviours. Friends and the internet are other information sources, although quality and accuracy of information are not always as high. The objective of this study is to update Canadian information about sources of sex education self-reported by adolescents and the related resource of having an adult to talk with about puberty and sexual health. Data from the 2019 Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth were used to examine the sources typically used to obtain sexual health information by 15- to 17-year-olds, as well as the prevalence and characteristics of adolescents reporting not having an adult to talk with about sexual health and puberty.

Description: Immunization against vaccine-preventable diseases such as shingles and pneumococcal disease play an important role in the overall health and well being of older Canadians. However, vaccine uptake remains low. Using data from The Canadian Health Survey on Seniors – 2019/2020, this study examined the prevalence and factors associated with shingles and pneumococcal vaccination among individuals aged 65 and older living in the community.

Description: As the utility of digital technologies continues to rise, individuals are spending an increasing amount of time online and on their smartphones. While these technologies have created many new opportunities for individuals, there is also growing interest in the connection between these technologies and well-being. Using data from the Canadian Internet Use Survey, this article examines the complex relationship between digital technology use and various measures of well-being, including mental health and interpersonal relationship satisfaction.

Description:

This dashboard presents selected data that are relevant for monitoring the impacts of COVID-19 on economic activity in Canada. It includes data on a range of monthly indicators - real GDP, consumer prices, the unemployment rate, merchandise exports and imports, retail sales, hours worked and manufacturing sales -- as well as monthly data on aircraft movements, railway carloadings, and travel between Canada and other countries.

Estimates are presented from January 2019 to the current reference month for each data series. The information will be updated continuously as new data becomes available, and additional series may be added to the dashboard as circumstances warrant.

To support the analysis of time series movements in the data, the dashboard reports changes in each series on both a month-over-month and year-over-year basis. For most of the variables reported, information on cumulative changes in the data both prior and subsequent to the end of 2019 is also presented by indexing the level estimates to December 2019, as depicted in the accompanying charts.

Description: Oral health is a crucial component of overall health, influencing both physical and mental well-being. Yet, despite the important role that access to and use of oral health care services play in maintaining optimal oral health, substantial disparities remain in access to oral health care services across population groups in Canada. Using data from the 2022 Canadian Community Health Survey, this study examines the association of dental insurance with oral health care access and use in Canada while accounting for income and sociodemographic factors. It contributes to a baseline of oral health care disparities before the implementation of the Canadian Dental Care Plan.

Description: Children’s oral health can affect functional capacities, psychological well-being, and social integration. Additionally, health behaviours established in childhood extend into adulthood and can influence oral health outcomes later in life. Using data from the 2019 Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth, this study investigates the association between dental insurance, income, and dental care access for Canadian children and youth aged 1 to 17 years. Description: Growing Up in Québec is a longitudinal population survey that began in the spring of 2021 at the Institut de la statistique du Québec. Among the children targeted by this longitudinal follow-up, some will experience developmental difficulties at some point in their lives. Those same children often have characteristics associated with higher sample attrition (low-income family, parents with a low level of education). This article describes the two main challenges we encountered when trying to ensure sufficient representativeness of these children, in both the overall results and the subpopulation analyses.

Description: The Simcoe Muskoka Opioid Overdose Cohort (SMOOC) is an expansion of a pilot project that had previously been conducted with the province of British Columbia to better understand the characteristics of people who experienced an opioid overdose. The objective of the SMOOC was to create a cohort of individuals who experienced a fatal or non-fatal overdose in the Simcoe Muskoka area between January 2018 and December 2019.
