This dashboard presents selected data that are relevant for monitoring the impacts of COVID-19 on economic activity in Canada. It includes data on a range of monthly indicators - real GDP, consumer prices, the unemployment rate, merchandise exports and imports, retail sales, hours worked and manufacturing sales -- as well as monthly data on aircraft movements, railway carloadings, and travel between Canada and other countries.

Estimates are presented from January 2019 to the current reference month for each data series. The information will be updated continuously as new data becomes available, and additional series may be added to the dashboard as circumstances warrant.

To support the analysis of time series movements in the data, the dashboard reports changes in each series on both a month-over-month and year-over-year basis. For most of the variables reported, information on cumulative changes in the data both prior and subsequent to the end of 2019 is also presented by indexing the level estimates to December 2019, as depicted in the accompanying charts.

It includes the latest weekly death data, historical weekly death data back to 2014, updated adjusted (i.e. the estimated number of weekly deaths) and expected weekly death counts produced for the 2020 reference year from the Canadian Vital Statistics: Death database (CVS:D). The CVS:D is an administrative survey that collects demographic and medical (cause of death) information from all provincial and territorial vital statistics registries on all deaths in Canada. With this tool, data users can explore current and historical weekly trends of deaths for each province and territory. Key variables such as age group and sex are also presented in interactive charts. The interactive tool allows users to examine excess deaths by comparing the trend in weekly deaths in 2020 to the trends in weekly deaths in previous years.

There are also large differences in the extent to which parents report that their special-needs children are being encouraged to reach their full potential in school and in their academic achievement relative to all Canadian children. This article draws on data from the 2001 Participation and Activity Limitation Survey (PALS), the 2000 Youth in Transition Survey (YITS) and the 2002 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) to document these differences.

Using probabilistic data linkage, an integrated database of injuries is obtained by linking on some subset of various key variables or their derivatives: names (given names, surnames and alternative names), age, sex, birthdate, phone numbers, injury date, unique identification numbers, diagnosis. To assess the quality of the links produced, false positive rates and false negative rates are computed. These rates however do not give an indication of whether the databases used for linking have undercounted injuries (bias). It is of interest to an injury researcher moreover, to have some idea of the error margin for the figures generated from integrating various injury databases, similar to what one would get in a survey for instance.

One way of overcoming this challenge is to use health information collected retrospectively. This study is based on two major propositions. The second proposition is that estimates calculated based on such data would closely approximate estimates calculated based on data with current health information.

Today, disability is viewed more often as a social construct than a medical one. Educational reforms have changed the way in which children with disabilities are integrated into the school system. With data from the 2001 Participation and Activity Limitation Survey, this article looks at the prevalence of children with disabilities, whether they attend regular classes and the kind of conditions for which they need special services. It examines the issues about access to educational services needed : which services are most needed and used, and what barriers may get in the way of obtaining such services.

The mandate of the Analytical Studies Branch (ASB) is to provide high-quality, relevant and timely information on economic, health and social issues that are important to Canadians. The branch strategically makes use of expert knowledge and a large range of statistical sources to describe, draw inferences from, and make objective and scientifically supported deductions about the evolving nature of the Canadian economy and society. Research questions are addressed by applying leading-edge methods, including microsimulation and predictive analytics using a range of linked and integrated administrative and survey data.
