In both this and the earlier bulletin, science and technology (S&T) expenditures are the sum of expenditures on research and development (R&D) and on related scientific activities (RSA).

The statistics presented are derived from the survey of the science and technology (S&T) activities of Federal departments and agencies. According to international convention, S&T is divided into two fields; Natural Sciences and Engineering (NSE) and Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH). These fields of science are further divided into Research and Development (R&D) and Related Scientific Activities (RSA).

The PRO are surveyed separately and are not reported here. The information in this document is intended primarily to be used by Scientific and technological policy makers, both federal and provincial, largely as a basis for inter-provincial and inter-sectoral comparisons. The surveys that generate these statistics also provide input for the development of a national aggregated R&D series. These national Research and Development estimates are used by businesses, governments and international organizations such as the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

This publication presents estimates of government revenues attributable to 1998 tourism. The main data sources are the Provincial and Territorial Tourism Satellite Account, the Input-Output tables and T-4 tax remittance files.

Government revenue covers receipts from-taxes on incomes (i.e., on employment earnings, corporate profits, net income of unincorporated business and government business enterprises)-contributions to social insurance plans (i.e., premiums for Canada/Quebec Pension Plan, Employment Insurance and Workers Compensation)-taxes on production and products (such as sales and property taxes)-sales of government goods and services.

These revenue sources are broken down into parts that can and cannot be attributed to tourism, for government as a whole and for the three levels of government (federal, provincial/territorial and municipal) separately. Estimates of the government revenue generated per dollar of tourism spending are reported as well.

The publication contains several summary tables showing revenues attributable to tourism by level of government and by source of revenue, as well as several appendix tables showing results by detailed industry and commodity. It also contains a discussion of the concepts, definitions, data sources and methods used in the study.

Description: The Public Service Commission has redesigned the Survey of Staffing (SOS) in light of changes brought about by the implementation of the New Direction in Staffing. The Staffing and Non-Partisanship Survey (SNPS) will be conducted every two years and targets all departments and agencies under the Public Service Employment Act (PSEA) - including those with less than 350 employees. The SNPS gathers information from a broader range of audiences - employees, hiring managers and staffing advisors - on key aspects of the staffing system (e.g., merit). As in previous years, the survey also gathers critical information on employees' understanding of their rights and responsibilities regarding political activities and non-partisanship.
