Estimates of Canadian gross domestic expenditures on research and development (GERD) presented in a matrix of performing and funding sectors and available at the national and the provincial level. The matrix illustrates three aspects of the Canadian research and development (R&D) effort: how much R&D is performed by each sector (federal, provincial, business enterprises, higher education, private non-profit), the amount of R&D each sector financed and the flow of funds between sectors.
Data on research and development (R&D) in the business enterprise sector are available for the natural sciences and engineering. The survey includes firms/enterprises, industrial research institutes and trade associations believed to be performing or funding R&D. Data are available on R&D expenditures, personnel engaged in R&D sources of funds for R&D, provincial distribution of R&D expenditures and personnel, payments and receipts for technology, and energy R&D expenditures by area of technology. Most of the information is available by industry groups, country of control, size of R&D program, employment size, revenue size, and by province.
