    This Juristat article examines the experiences of youth who came into contact with Nova Scotia police in 2012/2013 over a two-year period. The pathways of youth through Nova Scotia's justice system are explored, along with the extent of re-contact with police including prevalence, frequency and time to re-contact. This study uses data from three different sources including the Uniform Crime Reporting Survey, the Integrated Criminal Courts Survey and Nova Scotia's restorative justice system.

    Findings from a new report indicate that those dying from preventable illicit drug overdoses in British Columbia are a diverse population. Yet at the opposite end of the spectrum, it also comprises individuals who have multiple touch points with at least one of these systems.

In addition, inequalities in certain measures of health and social well-being among those who had a contact with Saskatchewan police between 2009 and 2010 are also explored.

    This article examines trends in police personnel (including selected demographic characteristics) and expenditures on policing (a component of justice system spending) for Canada, the provinces and territories, and census metropolitan areas. Information on officers per population is presented for each of the national, provincial, and census metropolitan area levels. Additionally, other statistics, including hirings and departures, eligibility to retire, and expenditures are presented for the provincial and national levels. Finally, selected personnel data are presented at the national level, including rank, gender, age group, and years of service of police officers.

    The information contained in this report provides an overview of the Canadian policing community and how it continues to change over time. Findings are primarily based on data from the Police Administration Survey. To provide a more complete picture of the state of policing in Canada, the following contextual information are included: policing responsibilities and strategies within the economics of policing discussions; international data on police personnel and gender from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and wage information from Statistics Canada's Labour Force Survey (LFS).

The Sort by feature provides three options:

  • By date – sorts results by product release date starting with the most recent.
  • By relevance is only needed or beneficial when you use the search box and submit a search query. Results are ordered by a combination of where the search term appears in the content, e.g., if it appears in the title, it likely means the product is more relevant to your search; how up to date or new the content in the product is; how popular the product is; and other factors.
  • By title – sorts results alphabetically.
